Obituary for George E. Fersch

George Edward Fersch, passed away at age 75 peacefully on Saturday April 15th 2023, in Dover, Delaware. He was born July 17th 1947, in Wilmington Delaware to the late Elizabeth and Louise Fersch.

George was the youngest of 5, growing up on Lower Oak Street in Wilmington, DE with his brothers Richard Fersch, Robert Fersch, John Fersch, and his sister Diana Hamilton.
He was a curious young man which led him to graduate from Wilmington High School with several accolades in 1965. His ambition led him to the University of Delaware where he graduated with a honorary Bachelor’s degree in 1969. A University dance is where he met and fell in love with his soulmate Joan Ann Bagdon.

George and Joan Married on June 22nd, 1968. Proceeding, George joined the ROTC while in college, graduating as a field alterity commissioned officer for the U.S. Army from Fort Sill, Oklahoma 1971. Shortly thereafter, George and Joan purchased their first house in Newark, Delaware. George started Goldey-Beacom College after being honorably discharged from the U.S Army on June 30th, 1976. George graduated with an additional associate degree from Goldey-Beacom College in 1978. George had two beautiful children with Joan; David Wayne Fersch and Stephanie Ann Fersch. George started his long tenured career of 34 years at the United States Post Office in Newark, DE.

Semi-Retired, George enjoyed to fish and watch his sports. Joan and George moved to Magnolia, DE in 1998. Fully retired from the U.S post office Feb 28th, 2005 George started a part time job at Lowe’s of Dover as a hardware associate for 4 years.

George was a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles sports fan, an avid University of Delaware football fan, a compassionate dog owner, a talented artist, and fisherman. George was a family man who enjoyed creating memories and traditions. George was adventurous and a caring friend of many. George had a passion for history, geography, world news, politics, and his faith.

George was a survivor of multiple ailments throughout his life. At the age of 36, he survived a heart attack. The following listed are as such; AFIB, diabetes and a serious terminal diagnosis in 2012 of COPD. This did not stop him from continuing his quality of life as he continued to adapt as needed, including one hip and one knee surgery. Lastly, in 2022 George was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

George was a devoted husband, son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend to all. He is survived by his sister Diana Hamilton, his brothers Richard and Robert Fersch, the large extended Fersch family, his wife Joan Fersch, the Bagdon family, his son David Fersch, his daughter Stephanie Evans, his son-in-law Michael Evans, and his only grandchild Anthony Evans.

Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 am Monday, April 24, 2023 at The Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901 where a visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until 11:00AM. Entombment with Fully Military Honors will be 1PM April 24th at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro, DE.
