Obituary for Joan Ann Schwartz (Carpenter)

Joan Ann Schwartz - Hartly, Delaware
Joan Ann Schwartz of Hartly, Delaware passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at the age of 85.

She was born in Newark, New Jersey as the only child of the late William and Estelle Carpenter.

Joan relocated from Long Island, New York to Dover, Delaware in 1966 with her husband James. After her children began school, Joan started working for The Red Cross and then Sanders Jewelers in Dover on a part time basis. Joan moved on to Wilmington Trust where she was a teller until her retirement. Joan truly felt like her colleagues and customers were her friends and continued relationships with many of them after retirement.

Joan dedicated her retirement years to serving others. She enjoyed working with her friends at the Hartly Ladies Auxiliary Fire company and felt especially proud the day she wore her uniform to march in her first parade. Joan received the Lifetime Member honor through her service to the fire company.

As a devout Catholic, Joan spread her love of God to the children she taught in religious education classes and Vacation Bible School at Immaculate Conception Church. She also enjoyed singing in the choir and serving as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Although Immaculate Conception was her home parish, Joan also volunteered as a classroom helper in her original parish’s school, Holy Cross.

Joan also served as a past board member for Harvest Years Senior Center in Camden, Delaware. She was quite the “gamer” and loved playing various card games, dominoes, and Mahjong with her many friends there. Additionally, she had a passion for creating beautiful ceramic pieces for her friends and family. On the weekends her favorite pastimes were to cheer on the Eagles and Phillies and spend time with her loving children and great grand-children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Schwartz and her son, William Schwartz.

Joan is survived by her daughter Sharon Benini and son-in-law David Benini, daughter Trisha Noble. She also is survived by five grandchildren, William Benini and his wife Adrielle, Bryan Benini and his wife Hannah, Jennifer Noble, William and Stephanie Schwartz, as well as five great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12:00 PM.,Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at the Immaculate Conception Church, 522 Main St., Marydel, MD. Internment will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to the Hartly V.F.C. Ladies Auxiliary, 2898 Arthursville Rd., Hartly, DE 19953 or Immaculate Conception Church.
