Obituary for Alma Anderson (Byrd)

Alma Glenor Anderson, age 84, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022, at home in
Dover, DE. She was born on February 11, 1938, to the late George Reed and Katherine
Turner Byrd in Abingdon, VA.

Alma attended Kings Mountain Elementary School in Abingdon, VA, and graduated
from Douglas High School in Bristol, VA, in 1956. She moved to New York City at the
age of 18 where she later met and married Samuel Anderson. The two went on to have
three daughters, Sandra Yvette, Sheila Yvonne, and Sharon Elaine. She was widowed
in 1975 at the age of 37 years old.

Alma met her life partner, Richard James, in New York City in 1986. The two moved
to New Jersey and bought a home together that they shared for over 30 years before
moving to Delaware in November of 2020. Richard sadly passed away suddenly in
March of 2021, months after the relocation.

Alma worked until her retirement at the age of 55 for Metropolitan Life Insurance
Company in New York City. Alma dedicated her life to her family which meant
everything to her. A great deal of time and memories were made at the New Jersey
home where lots of get-togethers were had for birthdays, holidays, or just because.
Alma and Richard also enjoyed travel and especially going to the casinos in Atlantic
City where she was lady luck and always seemed to win. She truly had a huge heart
and you were able to turn to her for advice and a listening ear or help anytime it was
needed. She will be remembered by many for the love and care she so freely gave as well
as her quick wit and sarcasm.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Anderson, parents, Reed and
Katherine Byrd, brother, George Byrd, sister, Macdonald Ramsey Porter, and finally
her life partner, Richard James.

Alma is survived by her daughters, Sandra Anderson Rashad (Donald Rashad),
Sheila Payne (Mike Payne), and Sharon Anderson (Johnny Fell, Jr.); stepson, Zedrick
DaVonne Scott (Monique Scott); grandchildren, Shanequa Sheila Anderson, Jordan
Aman Wilson, Romello Raekwon Rashad, Steven Samuel Payne, Nigel Marquez Scott
and Myla Camille Booth; sibling, Mary Katherine Hearns; and nephews, Charles
Michael Byrd, Prince Jr., Jason, and Brandon Hearns.

The family of Alma Anderson would like to thank everyone for their love, support,
kind words, messages, texts, and calls during this difficult time.
