Obituary for Franklin E McCoy

Retired Lt. Col. Franklin McCoy, 102, of Media, PA, formerly of Dover, DE., passed away on March 10, 2022 surrounded by his family. Born in Waterbury, CT. to the late Franklin V. and Ann (Jones) McCoy.
Frank began his career in the US Army Air Corps in 1942 at the cadet classification center in Nashville, TN and soon would begin basic training in Camden/Columbia, SC.
After graduating basic he transferred to Albany, GA where he would complete advanced training and receive his commission 2nd Lieutenant.
He then was stationed in Maxwell, AL for overseas transition; learning B24s and soon to West Palm Beach, FL to prep for North Africa, but was called back to Maxwell to instruct for 10 months. Frank was then stationed from 1943-1944 in Clovis, NM with B29s and would serve a tour in Saipan from 1944 until the end of WWII and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak-Leaf cluster on September 9, 1945.
Frank then had 45+ days rest and relaxation before being stationed in Mc Dill, FL (1946). In 1947 he transferred to MATS at Westover, MA and during this period in early 50s he did a tour in Thule, Greenland while they were building the runway. After returning to Westover, MA he would again leave on tour to Tachikawa, Japan for exactly one year. He then transferred to Dover AFB, DE in 1955. During his time in Dover he would tour in 1965 to Don Muang, Bangkok – MATS liaison officer and would then be stationed in Selfridge AFB, MI before returning to Dover AFB, DE. Over the years he also flew on many assignments: Kelly Field, TX; France; Belgian Congo.
He was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Nancy (Lake) of 51 years and his sister Betsy (Theroux). Frank is survived by his daughter Debra Peters (Ken) of Media, son Pete (Carol) of Phoenixville, 3 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and a niece and nephews.

The family will hold a private Celebration of Life Service. Burial with Full Military Honors will be held August 13, 2022 in Hillside Cemetery, Thomaston, CT.
