Obituary for Richard Darrell Scherer

Richard D. Scherer (Rick), 61, died unexpectedly in Washington D.C. on February 5, 2016.
Rick was born on August 30, 1954 in Superior, Wisconsin. He was a member of the Lake Superior Chippewa Indian Tribe, Fond du Lac Band. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1972 and was an all-conference and all-state sprinter on the track and field team. Rick attended Kellogg Community College and Ferris State University before graduating with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Rick joined the FBI in 1989 and worked as an engineer and an IT professional. During his work life he also attended the University of Maryland and earned an MS degree in Management and Technology and a second MS degree in Computer Systems Management. Rick greatly loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was an avid runner and completed over 50 marathons. Rick enjoyed soccer and was a coach and referee in local youth soccer leagues for over 20 years. Rick was also active as a coach in the Burtonsville youth wrestling leagues. He enjoyed sports and was a fan of the University of Michigan Wolverines, the Maryland Terrapins, and the Baltimore Ravens. He also enjoyed hiking, spending time outdoors and walking his dog Copper. Rick was looking forward to retiring in August and spending his retirement years in Dover, Delaware with his wife Lyn.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert D. and Mary M. Scherer; his twin brother Robert D. Scherer Jr, a younger brother Rudy D. Scherer, and a younger sister Mary R. Scherer. Rick is survived by his wife, Melinda (Lyn) Scherer, his son Ryan Scherer of Crownsville MD, and his daughter Lauren Scherer of El Paso, Texas. He also had two step children Jesse Lauterbach and Melissa (Missy) Lauterbach. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Ronald Scherer (Kathy) of Battle Creek, Michigan; Randall Scherer (Estrelete’) of Marshall, Michigan; and Rustin Scherer (Lisa) of Denver, Colorado. Rick also leaves behind four grandchildren, Chase and Talon Glenn and Sidney and Eli Lauterbach. Life’s End Services are by Michael J. Ambruso Funeral Director, Inc.
