Obituary for Henry William Austin Jr.

Henry William (Bill) Austin, Jr. of Camden, De passed away comfortably at his home with his family around him on May 30, 2018. He was the oldest of five children, born on Aug. 3, 1930 in Nanty-Glo Pa. to Henry and Mae Austin. Bill was a retired Msgt. from the U.S. Airforce having served 22 years. His service took him to Alaska, Colorado Springs, the U.S. Embassy in Canada, Thailand, Fort Worth, and ultimately he retired from Dover AFB in 1970. He then went on to his second career as Loan Officer Manager at the Dover Federal Credit Union for 15 years. During this time, Bill also obtained his B.A. in Behavior Science from Wilmington College of which he was very proud. In addition to his service with the Air Force, Bill was an accomplished musician on the piano and saxophone. He played at many of the local establishments of the 1960s through the 80s in Dover including: The Nuts, The Dinner Bell Inn, The Blue Coat Inn, Plaza Nine and later on, The Modern Maturity Center. His military travels allowed him to play where he was stationed too including the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa Canada. Locals may remember his jazz and contemporary style around the piano bar. He was greatly influenced by Frank Sinatra and Stan Getz. Music was his passion, but he certainly enjoyed reeling in a big one at McGinnis Pond too. Bill is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Barbara, sons Henry W. Austin III of Marydel and Gary R. Austin and wife Beth of Fredericksburg Va., daughters Holly (Curran) and husband Scott of Camden and Cathy Austin of Milton. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: James Curran, Henry W. Austin IV (Ashley), Mitchel Curran, Michael Austin (Rachel), Sarah Austin, Audrey Iocco, Rebecca Austin, Catherine Iocco, Daniel Austin and two great-grandchildren Noah Austin and ? Austin who will arrive in July. He is also survived by two brothers: Robert (Sheryl) Austin of California and Francis ( Donna) Austin of Texas. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son Russell Allen Austin of Dover, brother Don Austin of Montrose Colorado, and sister Carol Leonard of Nanty-Glo Pa. Funeral Services are Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Michael J. Ambruso Funeral Directors, Inc. Visitation for the public starts at 10:30 a.m. followed by services at 11:30. Interment is at Silver Lake Cemetery at 12:15 with military honors. The family would like to thank Vitas Healthcare and all of the incredible nurses who helped take care of Bill.
