Dr. Venerando J. Maximo, 84, of Dover, DE, passed peacefully on Dec. 10, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
Affectionately known as “Max” or “Dr. Max,” he was born in Manila, Philippines, the son of the late Simon Maximo and Arsenia de Jesus Maximo. A retired urologist, he was a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, College of Medicine. He emigrated to the United States in 1961, and began his medical career as an intern at Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital in Niagara Falls, New York, followed by surgical residencies at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh and Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. After retiring from private practice in 2004, he continued to touch lives volunteering on surgical medical missions to the Philippines, and as Co-Founder/Co-Medical Director and volunteer physician at the HOPE Medical Clinic at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover, which provides free medical care for the uninsured. He was also an adjunct faculty member at Delaware State University, College of Nursing.
Dedicated to community service and an active Rotarian, Dr. Max worked with many national and local organizations, including the American Urological Association, American College of Surgeons, Medical Society of Delaware, Kent County Medical Society, the Society of Philippine Surgeons in America, the Association of Philippine American Physicians in Delaware, Delaware Hospice, and the Knights of Columbus, among others. He was awarded the Outstanding Ruby Jubilarian for community service (1999), Outstanding Filipinos in the U.S.A. and Canada Circle of Leaders (2006), and Rotarian of the Year, Rotary International, District 7030 (2010).
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Max enjoyed travel, tennis, photography, and spending time with family at the beach.
