Obituary for Edward Francis Furjanic

Edward F. Furjanic, 78 of Dover, DE passed away peacefully on Monday, April 10, 2017 surrounded by family. Ed “Eddie”, “Peter Rabbit” was born in Steelton PA May 24, 1938 to the late AJ “Rags” and Ann (Bekelja) Furjanic. After graduating Catholic High, he attended UNC Chapel Hill on a football scholarship. In 1960 he was scooped up by “Boston” New England Patriots then back to his hometown roots Ed played for the ACFL Harrisburg Capitols.

In 1966 he and his family moved to Delaware where he became an active member of the business community.

Ed worked for Seaboard Finance & Farmers Bank and in 1971 he started his own professional collection company as President of Kent Systems in Dover, DE for over 25 yrs. He served as Chairman for Seaboard Collections Association, Fran Lore Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament, Kent General Hospital Evening with the Stars; President of The Kent County Quarterback Club and Delaware Gridiron Club; Board of Director & Fundraising for USO Club of Dover Air Force Base, American Cancer Society and Southern Delaware Hospice along with many local organizations.

Ed enjoyed life to its fullest. He was a caring person, always had positive outlook and a passion for helping others. He served many local organizations with fundraising efforts and sponsorship of local sports teams and was an active member of Holy Cross Church and School.

Rotary International was Ed’s passion when he joined the Dover Evening Club in 1972. He chaired the club’s initiatives for Rotary International Polio Plus drive and co-chaired major gift campaigns. In 1985 Ed became the Charter President for the new Dover Capital City Lunch Club. Ed is a Past District Governor of Rotary District #7360, 1989-90 and during his term stepped outside the box to build Rotary Relations with a District Conference in Bermuda. In 1994 he was a Rotary Team Leader for an Exchange Program to England and host family for a few years. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow.

With the love of Football, he coached Pop Warner in Dover late 70’s and enjoyed his season ticket holder seats for the Eagles and Alumni games at UNC. “Eddie 50” loved the game of golf. Any course would do. His favorite was playing in the Lobster Pot Pro-Am Tourney in Bermuda. His foursome taking home the trophy in 1990. He also enjoyed golfing at his home courses, Maple Dale CC, Wild Quail CC, Cripple Creek CC.

He brought a family tradition of roasting a pig to Delaware while hosting picnics and parties that quickly turned into aside business “Your Outdoor Roast” and later upgraded to a full catering business “Mary Edwards” that served Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. Ed was a devoted family man who turned a stranger into friend quickly. He and Betty made the best apple cake & cream puffs ever.

Ed is survived by his wonderful wife of 52 years, Elizabeth (Betty); daughters: Mary Beth Furjanic and Lisa Marie Furjanic of Dover, DE. Sister, Rosanne Fredenburgh; Brother, Augustus “Gus” Furjanic, Jr. (Janet); Sister-in-laws Tootsie Lutz and Anne Marie Reynolds; of Harrisburg, PA and nieces, nephews & cousins.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, A. J “Rags” & Ann (Bekelja) Furjanic; Sister Dorothea Novak.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 12 noon at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State St. Dover, where a Viewing will be held starting at 10:30 am.

On Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Prince of Peace Parish, Steelton PA viewing starting at 12:30pm, rosary at 1:30pm. Interment will follow in Churchville Cemetery, Oberlin, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to michaeljfox.org to help with research for Parkinson’s.
