Virginia  Schmidt-VanSlyk (Barbour)
Virginia Schmidt-VanSlyck, age 93, of Dover, died on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 in Milford, De. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Isaih Earl Barbour and Pearl (Horner) Barbour. Virginia graduated from Hanneman Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. She first worked for Columbia University Hospital in New York, NY and then later at Kent General Hospital in Dover. In the late 1960’s she became the School Nurse at Caesar Rodney Junior High School until retiring at the age of 67 in 1990. During her many years as Caesar Rodney Junior High School Nurse she helped many children and inspired many young girls to pursue a career in nursing. Following her retirement, she spent her years living between Dover and Florida. Virginia was a friend to many and devoted to her Catholic faith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and she will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William James Schmidt, and then Francis G. VanSlyck, as well as her daughter-in-law, Christine.

She is survived by her children, Richard E. Schmidt (Alma); Kathryn L. (Teresa), W. Robert, William James Jr. (Dinny) and Steven B. (Barbara); her grandchildren, Kristian, Cara, Ryan, Aaron, Rebecca, Rachel, Daniel, Kimberly, and Stephanie; and 4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her special niece, Patty White, and 1 other niece and 2 nephews.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State St., Dover. Interment will be on February 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. Donations in Virginia’s memory may be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. Dupont Hwy, Dover, DE 19901. Condolences may be forwarded via www.ambruso.com
