Obituary for George Dusty Rhoads

George A. “Dusty” Rhoads, 86, of Smyrna, died June 7, 2012. Born in Pondtown, MD, he was the son of the late George A. Rhoads and Florabelle Venewski. Dusty had served in The United States Marine Corps and was a proud veteran of WWII. Dusty was a self made man who earned his keep from the sweat of his own brow. As a hardworking child his work ethic transcended on into his adulthood where he went on to own and operate several Restaurants and Night Clubs which included G.G's, The Side Door, The Nuts and the Thomas England House. His love for people coupled with his strong desire to meet their needs enabled him to regularly change the face of Dover's nightlife for close to 50 years.
Dusty was a Past Commander of the Delaware Veterans Post #2. He was an avid boater, and enjoyed snow skiing and water skiing as well. In his quieter moments he enjoyed the company of his family and friends. Dusty truly left his mark on Dover and the surrounding area and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, James C. Rhoads; a sister, Mildred Winter, and one brother, Bill Rhoads. He is survived by 2 loving daughters, Deborah Earley and husband William Earley, of Magnolia, and Catherine Crampton and husband Norman Crampton, of Titusville, FL; his son, Bruce Rhoads and wife Kay, of Dover; one sister, Evelyn Fister; one brother, Homer Rhoads, of California; 7 Grandchildren and 8 Great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 from 5 pm until 7 pm at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso 1175 S. State St., Dover where Services will be held at 7 pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in his memory be made to the Kent County SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle Camden, DE 19934. Condolences may be forwarded and Guest Book may be signed via www.ambruso.com
