Robert D. Gates, age 64, of Dover, DE died December 14, 2014 at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. Born in St. Louis, MO. He was the son of the late Raymond and Erma (Hill) Gates.
Mr. Gates was a U.S. Air Force Veteran having served in the Regular Air Force and the Air Force Reserve. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, The Gulf War, Desert Storm, Desert Shield, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired from Military Service as a Chief Master Sgt. In 2005. He later retired from the State of Delaware where he served in Communications with the State Police at Troop # 3. At the time of his death Mr. Gates was serving as a staff member at the Holiday Park Family Camp located in Greensboro, MD. Mr. Gates was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge of Dover for over 30 years, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler. He was also a member of The American Legion, Walter L. Fox Post #2 in Dover. Besides having a passion for electronics, he was a Private Pilot who enjoyed Air Planes along with travel. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
He leaves his loving wife, Lillie Gates of Dover, DE; three sons, Joseph R. Gates of Frederica, DE, Brian R. Gates of Glen Bernie, MD, James R. Gates, of Rising Sun, MD; three step children, Neville R. Gibson and Veronica M. Gibson, both of Aberdeen, MD, Nerissa J. Gibson, of Dover, DE; two brother, William Gates, of Tucson, AZ, and James Gates of St. Louis, MO; seven grandchildren, Avery, Marquis, Rachel, Hannah, Joshua, Elijah, and Dustin; along with a niece and nephew.
A Viewing will be held starting at 10 AM on Friday, December 19, 2014 at the Holiday Park Family Camp Pavilion, 14620 Drapers Mill Rd. Greensboro, MD 21639, where Services will be held at 11 AM. Private Interment with Military Honors will take place at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery in bear, DE. Life’s End Services are by Michael J. Ambruso Funeral Director, Inc.
